2024 could be the year OLED displays arrive for the iPad Pro.
Apple has started inviting members of the media to a “special Apple Event” on May 7th and as The Verge notes, the invite’s image includes the Apple Pencil, making it abundantly clear that iPads will be the focus of this virtual event.
Rumours suggest the iPad Pro will get some of its most significant improvements since the 2021 M1 overhaul, which includes the long-awaited OLED display (with a slight size bump to 13 inches for the bigger model), an updated M3 chipset, and the long overdue horizontal repositioning of its front-facing camera.
Apple’s current 11-inch iPad Pro features an LCD panel, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro features mini-LED backlighting for increased brightness and a higher contrast ratio. OLED technology would eliminate the need for backlighting, with benefits including an even higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks, lower power consumption, and more. Apple is also expected to incorporate very thin OLED displays consisting of a combination of flexible and rigid materials, which could allow the next iPad Pro models to be slightly thinner.
The event will mark the end of the longest wait for new iPad models since Apple first introduced them into the product category.
There might also be a new Apple Pencil and a redesigned Magic Keyboard with an aluminium build and a larger trackpad.
We can also expect updated iPad Air models, possibly with a larger 12.9-inch option. Recent reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggest that inventory of the current iPad Air is decreasing at Apple’s retail outlets. This signals that an enhanced version could be on its way soon.
As with all things Apple, your nearest Digicape will be the first place to look when trying to get your hands on any new Apple tech.
Watch the Apple-shaped space and May the force be with OLED iPads – wink.
